Where is the next Wright on Time book set?
I’ve set a course for the Wright family and while I’ve laid out their entire path, only the first dozen states or so are set in stone. Here is the ordering for the first 18:
BOOK 1: ARIZONA
BOOK 2: UTAH
BOOK 3: WYOMING
BOOK 4: SOUTH DAKOTA
BOOK 5: MINNESOTA
BOOK 6: IOWA
BOOK 7: ILLINOIS
BOOK 8: TENNESSEE
BOOK 9: MISSOURI
BOOK 10: ARKANSAS
BOOK 11: MISSISSIPPI
BOOK 12: LOUISIANA
BOOK 13: TEXAS
BOOK 14: OKLAHOMA
BOOK 15: KANSAS
BOOK 16: NEBRASKA
BOOK 17: COLORADO
BOOK 18: NEW MEXICO
When does the next book come out?
Book 1 came out in August 2009. Book 2 came out in November 2009. Book 3 came out in August 2010. Book 4 came out in August 2011, and Book 5 is scheduled for an October 2012 release. It all depends on lots of factors such as final editing, illustrations, the physical production of the books, and much more.
What are you going to write about for my state? Can I make suggestions?
Well… As of May 2009 the first six books are completely written and I’m actively writing about Illinois (Book 7). I have an idea of what to write about for about twenty more of the states, but I would love to hear reader suggestions for all the states after Illinois (see the list above). If I use your suggestion, I’ll thank you in the acknowledgments of that book and on this site.
How do you decide where the Wrights are going to travel next?
I started in my current home state of Arizona and made a logical route for the Wright family based on my own family’s preference for traveling. We knew from the start that we wanted to set the IOWA book in October (I grew up in Iowa and Illinois), so I worked my way backwards for that. I also wanted SOUTH DAKOTA to be set at the same time as the Harley Davidson Sturgis Festival since that festival is prominent in that book. Many more states were picked based on the month the Wright’s will be in, as well as what states were physically close to each other (the Wright family won’t be driving their RV to Hawaii, but they might drive to Alaska).
Are the places you mention in the book real?
Many are, but most are fictional compilations of places my family and I have traveled to as well as researched places I have found out about just for these books (and for fun with my kids).
Are the characters based on anyone you know?
Yes, but only some of their characteristics. 🙂 Imagine my surprise though when I saw a girl in my younger daughter’s dance class who looked exactly like how I had envisioned Nadia to look — months after I’d written the first few books!
Where did you get the idea for this book series?
Over the course of many years of book shopping (online and in stores), my daughters and I got to talking one day about our dream children’s chapter book series. We hadn’t been able to find any books with homeschoolers like them, nor books with parents being main characters. We wanted books that were fun, exciting, interesting, and had characters like the people we knew in real life. So, the Wright family was born. We discussed the family and their travels for many weeks before I started penning their adventures. Since I love science fiction so much (and so does my family), we had to throw in a bit of a science fiction twist, too. I won’t give any more details away for now so that I don’t spoil any future surprises.
Can these books be read in any order, or do I have to start with Book 1?
These books can absolutely be read in any order. I envision families going on vacation to various states and picking up that state’s book at a local gift store. All the books will always be available on amazon.com for readers to pick up the rest of the series at any time. Be sure to ask your local library to order copies, too!
I’m a writer, too, do you have any tips for me?
Write-write-write, then edit-edit-edit. After you’ve done that, have some friends look over your writing and tell you their impressions.
Do you live in an RV?
No, I don’t, but I have stayed in one and I love to travel.
Do you homeschool your children?
Yes, both of my daughters (born in 09/1996 and 09/2000) have been homeschooled their whole lives. It isn’t the lifestyle for everyone, but it’s great for us.
Can I be in your next book?
Maybe. I’ll be having contests periodically. At least one will be a contest to have a reader become a character in one of the Wright on Time books. Be sure to sign up for the monthly newsletter to find out more!
Can I ask you more questions?
Sure! Fill out the contact form on this site or post a question at the bottom of this page. Be sure to get permission from your parent if you are under 13. If I get the same questions asked a bunch of times, I’ll include my answer on this page.
Thanks and happy reading!
